Projectiles
Automated Ultrasonic Inspection of Projectiles and Artillery Shells
ScanMaster’s LS-55 is an automated ultrasonic testing system for the inspection of projectile and artillery shell bodies during manufacture. It uses multiple probe heads to inspect defined regions of each part in a single pass, supporting consistent inspection and high-volume production workflows.
Inspect Internal Discontinuities
Ultrasonic testing helps manufacturers identify internal discontinuities that cannot be assessed by visual inspection alone. The LS-55 can use longitudinal and shear wave inspection to examine specified regions for indications such as cracks, voids and inclusions. Probe arrangement, inspection coverage and evaluation criteria are configured for the part and the applicable inspection procedure.
LS-55 Inspection Capabilities
Multiple Probe Heads in a Single Pass
Multiple probe heads enable the LS-55 to inspect designated areas of a projectile body during one automated inspection sequence. This arrangement supports production throughput while allowing the scan configuration to be tailored to the component geometry and inspection requirements.
Configurable Inspection and Evaluation
Regions of interest and inspection parameters can be defined for each application. The system supports automated evaluation and pass/fail decision logic based on the specified acceptance criteria, with error-proofing sequences to help maintain a consistent inspection process.
Projectile Sizes and Configurations
LS-55 configurations have been developed for projectile types including 80 mm, 105 mm, 120 mm (M98) and 155 mm including M107, M795, Extended range projectiles and others. The inspection setup is adapted to the specific part, it’s dimensions, geometry and manufacturing requirements of the part.
Integration with Production Handling
The LS-55 can be integrated with automated loading and unloading equipment, including robot-based handling systems. This supports continuous production workflows and reduces manual part handling between inspection stages.
Compliance with Industry Standards
Designed to meet the stringent quality requirements of the ordnance industry, including compliance with AMS-STD-2154, European, US, NATO, Asian and other applicable defense manufacturing standards.
